Go back in time at the Oxford Castle Unlocked
Enter Oxford Castle Unlocked and head back to the 11th century for an exciting day with your kids. This 1 hour tour with costumed guides will take you around this fascinating building and all you have to do is let history transport you! Learn all about the captivating history of the castle and how through the years, it has become one of Oxford’s emblematic icons. Please note that you can only visit the Castle on a guided tour which regrettably is not suitable for prams and pushchairs. Also, children under 5 years old aren’t permitted in St George’s Tower.
Be part of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings weekend at the Museum of Art and Archaeology
The Museum of Art and Archaeology is organising a big historical weekend on the 15th and 16th of July and it’s a great way to learn more about Great Britain’s inhabitants in the early centuries. Have you ever heard Viking music or worn Anglo-Saxon jewelry? Here is your chance! Your kids will have access to talks and various activities designed to help them discover more about this famous part of Britain’s history. Entertainment will take place on both days and is free to attend.
Admire the beautiful gardens at the Blenheim Palace
Located in Woodstock, Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a great destination for a full day packed of fun for the entire family. The impressive palace is home to a magnificent collection of tapestries, portraits and sculptures. Sitting in the middle of absolutely stunning and well-maintained park and gardens, this is one day out that you don’t want to miss. They have plenty of activities planned over the summer, including a bike ride on the 13th of August. Take your bikes along for the Family cycling day and enjoy a full day in the Park – you can follow the two available routes and see where you end up. Or, if you would prefer to follow the white rabbit, there is a Alice & The White Rabbit hide and seek event on the 19th& 20th of August. Finally, you can saddle up for pony rides on the 26th& 27th of August.
Get a snap with a crocodile at the Crocodile of the World
This unique crocodile zoo is less than 20 miles away from the Oxford Abingdon Hotel and will delight the whole family. You will discover an impressive selection of 17 different types of crocodiles as well as turtles and reptiles. Three times a day you can attend the feeding of the animals and listen to the keepers’ team tell you all about the animals on show. For the bravest ones, you can even hold a baby crocodile/alligator and get a souvenir photo!
